Amtrak Chicago Union Station Yard Rehabilitation

This design-build project included major renovations and upgrades to the Amtrak Chicago Union Station railyard. The yard, Amtrak's busiest in the nation, remained open during the entire project.
This presented a unique and challenging environment requiring substantial coordination and communication by all of the parties involved.

Working as a subcontractor to Kiewit, Reyes Group, Ltd.'s scope of work covered a broad range of items, including:

• Excavating and backfilling several thousand linear feet of electrical and communications duct banks, and setting more than 60 electrical manholes.
• Excavating, installing, and backfilling more than 1,000 feet of new water main, performing several specialized "wet taps" from existing mains, installing more than 500 feet of copper water service, and installing more than 50 large water cabinets for Amtrak's use servicing traincars.
  
• Demolition and replacement of more than 40,000 square feet of concrete platforms between railroad tracks, more than 25,000 square feet of specially sealed concrete floor, a vehicle ramp, and several loading docks.
  
• Excavating, preparing, and placing concrete for the substructure for 10 bridge spans, 4 electrical substation pads, and numerous small equipment pads of various dimensions.
  
• Various site demolition and preparation work as requested by the owner and general contractor.

Due to the high quality of work performed by Reyes Group, Ltd., the contract value of this project nearly doubled over its duration as both the owner and general contractor requested that RGL perform additional work.
